About the Collection

The Stanford Historical Photograph Collection contains more than 16,000 images documenting Stanford University and its founders. The collection is arranged in four series. The general photograph series includes images of campus and campus life, athletics, construction on campus, individual buildings and specific sites, students and student life activities, commencement activities, academic departments, earthquake damage, campus protests, and student housing. The Stanford family series includes images of Leland and Jane Stanford, Leland Stanford Jr., other Lathrop and Stanford family members, Stanford residences, and a few images from Leland Stanford's connection with the Central Pacific Railroad. The biographical series consists of individual and group images of faculty and staff. The fourth series includes oversized images from the previous three series.
